Intel Brings 3D Capability to any Device with Launch of RealSense Depth Camera Series

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Good news for those looking to add 3D capabilities to any device or machine as Intel recently released their RealSense 400 series depth cameras. Both the 415 and 435 cameras are USB-powered, ready to use out of the box and capable of processing depth using the onboard D4 Vision processor, which can process multiple real-time image streams without a GPU or host CPU.

Both models work indoors and out, in any lighting environment, and are supported by Intel’s open-source RealSense SDK 2.0, making them ideal for not only developers but makers and educators as well.

The hardware for each is nearly identical—with both models featuring a pair of depth sensors, an RGB sensor and infrared projector. They differ, however, when it comes to the depth camera modules; the 415 offers a rolling shutter with a FOV of 69.40 X 42.50 X 770 while the 435 module features a global shutter and increases the FOV to 91.20 X 65.50 x 100.60. Both also offer a depth stream output resolution of 1280 X 720, RGB sensor resolution/frame rate of 1920 X 1080 (@30fps) and a maximum range of approximately 10 meters (depending on conditions).

“Many of today’s machines and devices use 2D image recognition-based computer vision, but with Intel RealSense’s best-in-class depth technology, we are redefining future technologies to ‘see’ like a human, so devices and machines can truly enrich people’s lives,” explains Sagi Ben Moshe, VP of Intel’s RealSense Group, in a press release. “With its compact, ready-to-use form, the Intel RealSense D400 Depth Camera series not only makes it easy for developers to build 3D depth sensing into any design, but they are also ready to be embedded into high-volume products.”

As far as applications go, Intel envisions their depth cameras for use in AR/VR applications, robotics, drones and more. Intel is also looking to OEMs and ODMs to integrate the technology into new devices before heading to market. Intel’s 400 series depth cameras are available now for pre-order, with the 415 retailing for $149 and the 435 for $179.
