Apple Reportedly Working on a Wireless AR/VR Headset Set for 2020

We’ve seen just how much potential there is for AR/VR headsets in the design and engineering world—whether it be modeling in the context of the real world or assisting assembly line workers. That said, we’re still on the cusp of knowing just how significant that shift can be. But when Apple gets involved—there’s usually a sure sign that something big is about to go down.

According to CNET, Apple is working on a single wireless headset for both AR and VR applications—and it could come as soon as 2020.

The source, credited as being familiar with Apple’s plans, says that the headset would include an 8K display for each eye, and will be untethered from other hardware devices including a smartphone or other device.

While Apple rumors always come and go, Apple CEO Tim Cook has never been shy about his praise for AR—in many cases, seeing it as being the next “iPhone territory.” Considering the groundwork the company has been laying for AR apps, it makes perfect sense that at least some variation of a headset is due from the Cupertino company.

Microsoft has already been heating up the market over the past few years with the HoloLens headset. Early testers in the design and engineering space include Autodesk and a small handful of automotive companies:

While only time (and plenty of more rumors) will tell, it’s starting to look like the AR/VR future is about to get a heck of a lot more competitive—and hopefully, useful for accelerating product development.
