Tourism in the Capital of India – Delhi
Latest News
From the huge variety of Delhi’s markets to interesting historical and religious sites, this city has much to offer. For those with only a few days in Delhi, these are some sites that should not be missed.
Swaminarayan Akshardham
The newly constructed Akshardham Temple complex is a stunning sight that remains true to India’s history and pride. The complex is large and well-planned, and attention to detail can be seen in each of the buildings, manicured gardens, and the modern exhibits.
The Akshardham Mandir is the focal point of the site, and it is an incredible piece of craftsmanship. This beautiful building is marked by dome rooftops and intricate carvings on the base, pillars, walls, and ceilings.
Visiting the temple itself is free, although there are fees for the exhibitions and the evening light show. It is important to note the high level of security at the temple complex. Cameras, cell phones, and bags are not permitted inside. No more than a wallet and passport are allowed in, and there is a very thorough security check prior to entry. There is an area to turn in items for safe keeping, called the cloak room. Those who wish to avoid too much hassle should leave all extra belongings back at the hotel when visiting this site.
Red Fort and Jama Masjid Mosque
Located in the heart of Old Delhi, these two sites make up a good one-day itinerary. The Red Fort, built during the Mughal empire in the 17th century, was largely destroyed by the British in the 19th century. However, it still retains high walls and several structures dotting the green lawns within. A closer look at any of the buildings inside the fort uncovers more detailed designs and textures.
The Jama Masjid mosque is located only a few blocks from the Red Fort, through the Meena Bazaar, just one of New Delhi’s local markets. This 17th century mosque is the largest in India. It does not take long to explore, but it is a great place for people-watching and soaking up the culture.
There is a dress code at the mosque. Shoes are not to be worn inside, but there is a man out front to watch them. For those who don’t want to get their feet or socks dirty, socks can be purchased out front. Long loose cloth coverings are available at no cost, frequently given to women in western dress. There doesn’t appear to be a mandate for head coverings, but it is always good to be respectful of the tradition.
Qutb Minar Complex
Qutb Minar, located in southern Delhi, is definitely a must-see for any trip to Delhi. The centerpiece of the complex is the Qutb Minar tower. Construction began on the tower in the 12th century and continued over several dynasties. The rest of the complex is filled with ruins of Hindu, Jain, and Muslim origin, much of it constructed with great attention to detail. There are audio guides for rent at the entrance for a low cost.
