‘Betrayal at Cloud City’ is a 2,800-Piece LEGO Star Wars City In The Skies

Even in a world full of change, there are many constants in the universe: taxes, Disney’s ever-present plan to own everything your childhood holds dear, and LEGO Star Wars kits. LOTS of LEGO Star Wars kits.

While it can’t house the gigantic 7,541-piece Millenium Falcon, this 2,812-piece LEGO recreation of The Empire Strikes Back’s Cloud City includes a number of iconic scenes from the movie’s climax.

For all the true Star Wars fans out there, you know you gotta have it.

The Betrayal at Cloud City Set is split into four sections: the infamous torture room where Darth Vader had Han Solo frozen in carbonite (this includes the sensor balcony which serves as the resting place for Luke Skywalker’s missing hand), the dining area where Lando Calrissian turned on his friends, the landing platform where Boba Fett’s Slave I ship took a carbonized Han Solo back to Jabba the Hutt, and a corridor leading to the torture room which serves as the starting point for Luke and Darth Vader’s first fight.

That’s a lot to unpack for sure, so let’s start in chronological order with the landing area. Pretty self-explanatory, this circular patch of land houses Boba Fett’s Slave 1 ship. The ship measures 4 inches (11cm) high, 7 inches (19cm) long, and 7 inches (18cm) wide, and has space for a minifigure cockpit, an undercarriage to store a frozen Han Solo, and moveable wings which allow it to transform into its two flight modes.

Next is the dining area, which is more than the place where Lando pulled a fast one and backstabbed Han and Leia. This place does have a dining room with five minifigure seats, but it also includes a lounge, the garbage processing room where C-3PO got turned into scrap, and a promenade leading to many walkways which lead to other parts of the build.

The corridor leading to the torture room isn’t as memorable as the other sections of the model, but it does have many objects which are very good at “persuading” others, such as an interrogation chair, and a prison cell. Since it is located beside the landing area, the corridor also has a hanger with a trapdoor as well as a rack for weapons and tools. The extra space in this room allows you to park the Twin-Pod Cloud car which comes with opening minifigure cockpits and stud shooters.

Finally, we have the torture room (or “interrogation room,” for those who don’t like to call it for what it is). Apart from housing a pretty neat area to ask Han Solo some questions, the room has a lever which can “freeze” Solo into a block of gray carbonite.

Across the carbon freeze chamber is the sensor balcony where Luke needed a hand after his first battle with Darth Vader. The railing has a swing-out function just like in the movie, while the path leading to the balcony has a maintenance cabin with an opening window.

The city measures 6 inches (16cm) high, 22 inches (58cm) wide, and 22 inches (56cm) deep. It comes with 18 unique minifigures to run around in its four sections. This, combined with the inclusion of the Slave 1 ship, makes its $349.99 price tag seem just a little less surprising.

The Betrayal at Cloud City LEGO set launches in October 1, 2018. To learn more about this city in the sky, visit the LEGO shop webpage.
