I forgot to mention that I was playing around outside with the phototransistor receivers with a 3 inch lens. I could hear the buzzing wings of flying insects buzzing around over the lawn at about 20 – 30 feet away. Works great with car head lights and tail lights as well as aircraft strobe lights. I did some testing modulating laser pointer elements with audio. It works quite well. In fact, if you add a preamp to the receiving circuit you can listen to the dot (reflection) at couple of hundred feet away so you don’t have to be line of sight with the source. Larger lenses work better for the receiver. You should 4 times the distance from a 6 inch lens compared with a 3 inch. Future testing: Modulate a high powered flash light beam and point it at white building at night. see how far away I can receive audio (Optical Pirate Radio).
