Following successful launches in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, China, Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia, LexisNexis® unveiled Lexis Advance® India – an innovative online legal research platform, at the India Habitat Centre, New Delhi on April 26, 2019. The launch was supported and attended by distinguished members from the Society of Indian Law Firms (SILF) and the Bar Association of India, along with several other eminent law firm associates, senior advocates and in-house counsels.

The event embarked upon the importance of rapidly moving technology and innovation in the legal industry. An initiative by LexisNexis® to introduce technological solutions for the legal industry.

Welcoming the dignitaries present during the occasion, Mr. Biju Ganesan, Senior Director Marketing, LexisNexis India, delved on the impact technology will have on the legal profession. Will technologies like Artificial Intelligence and Machine learning lead to the end of the legal profession or will it aid legal professionals to improve their efficiency and deliver more value to their clients? This fundamental question laid the foundation that ensued the panel discussion, titled ‘Onset of the Techno-legal Era’”

The panel comprised of Dr. Lalit Bhasin, President – BAI & SILF; Mr. Jyoti Sagar, Chairman & Founder, J. Sagar Associates; Dr. Pavan Duggal, Founder & Owner, Pavan Duggal Associates; Mr. Parvesh Kheterpal, Head Legal, Lanco Group; Mr. C.V. Raghu, Group General Counsel, Samvardhana Motherson Group; and Mr. Manoj K Singh, Founding Partner, Singh & Associates.

Expounding on the evolution of technology, Dr. Lalit Bhasin, President, Society of Indian Law Firms (SILF), said, “Technological advancement is certainly necessary in terms of legal landscape, providing futuristic solutions to today’s challenges, but the sanctity of legal profession should remain intact. Artificial Intelligence should be regulated by a legal body”.

Mr. Jyoti Sagar played the key role of being the coordinator in the discussion panel and said, “It was an absolute pleasure meeting everyone at LexisNexis Launch Event and share views on this thought-provoking topic of technology and law. Data driven analysis by technological tools are really helping lawyers to leverage their time and expertise thereby doing tasks in a cost-efficient manner. Technology has enhanced the pace of workflow and eased a lawyer’s job.”

Taking forward the discussion, Dr. Pavan Duggal mentioned, “Artificial Intelligence can save 80-90% space of data storage. Electronic intelligence has been emerging and leaving positive footprints by doing remarkable activities. Cybersecurity is also growing at a fast pace with e-courts systems being installed. However, Indian legal ecosystem needs to work upon big data. Law firm’s data breach can also be minimized by adapting best practices and culture of digital space. Legal ramification of acts done by AI, expect ethical intelligence”.

Mr. Manoj K Singh mentioned, “Law is a dynamic field, it keeps on moving and changing. Artificial Intelligence is growing at a fast pace. The time has arrived for predictive coding and legal chatbots, e-discovery and computing, making the legal processes efficient and effective”. On the contrary, he further added, “Artificial Intelligence can have solutions for back logs, but it cannot take the physiological aspect away”.

Mr. C.V. Raghu said, “Technology has paved way for seamless in-house transitions as we are all gearing up for great tech-abled times ahead.”

During the event, Mr. Pervesh Kheterpal, mentioned, “Technology and innovative solutions will surely benefit legal professionals, empowering and enabling them with the confidence and precision to make the right decisions”.

Mr. Manishan Shandil, Director of Content Engineering & Fabrication APAC LexisNexis, said, “This solution provides an unprecedented advantage of having a specialist on their desktop to guide their associates that, in turn, enables them to save time on research, increase their billable hours and get instant guidance on unfamiliar subjects.”

Towards the end of the event, team LexisNexis gave a live product demonstration showcasing the capabilities and utility of ‘Lexis Advance® India’. The evening was brought to a close with the esteemed guests interacting over dinner.
