A closer look at Cabonnichthys, another human ancestor

nested their mid-sized, elongate rhipidistian, Cabonnichthys (Figs. 1, 2), as a taxon derived from Eusthenopteron and kin.

By contrast
the large reptile tree (LRT, 1505 taxa; subset Fig. 3) reverses/flips the Ahlberg and Johanson cladogram, nesting this large, flattened bottom feeder basal to the free-swimming Eusthenopteron and basal to the large, flattened bottom feeder stem tetrapods, Tinirau and Panderichthys. So, contra tradition, Eusthenopteron is not in the lineage of tetrapods, but basal to other swift swimming lobe fins, spine fins and ray fins in the LRT.

Cabonnichthys burnsi (Ahlberg and Johanson 1997; Late Devonian) was originally considered a mid-sized lobe-fin fish. Here it nests at the base of the clade of lobe-fin fish that includes Osteolepis, Eusthenopteron and most bony ray-fin fish. It also nests at the base of the stem tetrapods, including Tinirau, Panderichthys and Tiktaalik. So Cabonnichthys is close to the lineage of human ancestors.

The revised phylogenetic nesting of Cabonnicthys
makes it a much more interesting taxon basal to the two great clades that comprise most of the vertebrates on the planet. Scoring from the drawing failed to bring the same resolution as scoring from the photographs.
