Why We All Need to Fight Facial Recognition Technology

Facial recognition is fast becoming the new norm worldwide. The advanced algorithmic software capable of identifying and matching faces has grown popular across various sectors, from banks and law enforcement agencies to businesses and academic institutions.

This form of artificial intelligence has become increasingly accessible, and usage is no longer restricted to corporate and government entities — smartphone manufacturers have begun implementing facial recognition as standard, and Facebook now offers a facial recognition setting.[1]

There are benefits to facial recognition technology: it allows for easier identification of criminals and can help find missing persons faster. It also opens up interesting possibilities for future technologies, such as self-driving cars.

However, there are distinct disadvantages that must be acknowledged. Regulations as to who can use and access facial recognition technology, and how facial data is stored, are blurry. If sensitive information such as a person’s birthday is stored alongside their image and address, that individual can be monitored with ease.

Corporations that sell the technology have proven dubious where it concerns transparency and data collection practices. Clearview AI compiled a gargantuan database of facial data, and some of the photos were found to have been scraped from social media accounts.

Another key issue is that facial recognition software tends to demonstrate a distinct bias[2] towards minorities and women, which doesn’t bode well for these populations should police and government agencies choose to heavily rely on it.

Unfortunately, locations where facial recognition technology exists are challenging if not impossible to avoid. In the United Kingdom, the government plans to launch live facial recognition cameras throughout London.[3]

Bearing that in mind, there are still steps we can take to prevent our private data from being compromised. You can opt-out of voluntary facial recognition software, such as Facebook’s facial recognition feature or on your personal devices.
To evade surveillance by publicly-installed cameras, you can wear large sunglasses or cover your face with a mask to prevent the software from identifying you — it’s been established that it’s far from infallible, and can make mistakes.

One silver lining is that passive acceptable of society-wide facial recognition looks unlikely. The fight against facial recognition[4] is taking off as people protest the gross invasions of privacy that the liberal implementation of this technology entails. Demonstrations at university campuses throughout the US illustrated that such extreme surveillance measures would not be tolerated — particularly in facilities where intense scrutiny is unwarranted and unwelcome.

In an intrusive world, we must all take measures to safeguard our privacy both no matter where we are. A Virtual Private Network[5] can keep snoops from acquiring personal information online, and simple measures to hide your face can shield your unique facial data offline.
