By default, your ISP will provide their own DNS servers which are unreliable and slow to begin with. But thanks to companies like Google, Cloudflare and OpenDNS; you can have their services for free and it’s all you need to speed up your connection.
DNS servers are also very useful while coming to security as proprietary ones might track your internet usage which is not ideal and is a breach of privacy.

Cloudflare: Primary: 1.1.1.1, Secondary: 1.0.0.1
Google Public DNS: Primary: 8.8.8.8, Secondary: 8.8.4.4
Open DNS: Primary: 208.67.222.222, Secondary: 208.67.220.220
Comodo Secure DNS: Primary: 8.26.56.26, Secondary: 8.20.247.20
Verisign DNS: Primary: 64.6.64.6, Secondary: 64.6.65.6
How to Choose the Fastest DNS Server?
The speed of your DNS server depends on your geographical location, the distance between you and your server and sometimes if the DNS server’s capability of handling the bandwidth needed.
To get the best DNS server favorable, applications like DNS Jumper, DNSPerf, Google’s Namebench are some of the best free tools to check for the DNS server possible.
To check for the best DNS server, follow these steps:
• Press Windows + R keys to open RUN.
• Type CMD to open the command prompt.
• Type nslookup (then the website domain, for example google.com). For example, nslookup google.com
If you want to check different DNS without changing to them before, then
• Open Command Prompt again.
• Type the command: nslookup (then the website domain) then (DNS server address). For example: nslookup google.com 8.8.8.8
How to Check Your Current DNS Server?
To check for your current DNS address, follow these steps:
• Press Windows + R keys to open RUN.
• Type CMD and open the command prompt.
• Type the command ipconfig/all and press enter.
• It should show the DNS servers at the end of the list.
Another easy and simple way to check your DNS servers is through DNSLeakstest.com and clicking on the standard test button.
If you get your DNS as 192.168.x.x, then your router handles the DNS servers and you need to go to the router admin panel which is typically 192.168.1.1, 192.168.0.1 to change them manually.
How to Change Your DNS Servers?
To change your DNS server there are two ways to do this:
First Way:
• Open run by pressing Windows Key + R, and type ncpa.cpl.
• The network connection manager will open.
• Right click on the active connection.
• Double-click on the Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and a pop-up window will open.
• At the end of the window, click on the ‘Use the following DNS server addresses’ and type the DNS server addresses that you want to use.
• Click on OK and then OK to save the changes.
Changing your DNS servers is not the only thing you can do to boost your internet and there’s no golden rule of thumb and guarantee that this will speed up your connection. However, there will be a noticeable difference in web page loading times and better pings.
