What Exactly Is Augmented Reality and What Is it For?

More commonly known by the acronym AR (Augmented Reality), it is an immersive technology able to enrich the sensory experience through technological tools. In other words, it merges real and virtual elements, improving the perception of the reality around us.

In fact, it is a real “sixth sense” that optimizes the sensory experience by combining it with the digital one. Through the use of Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Hi-Tech devices, it creates deeper immersive experiences, going beyond the reality perceived with the five senses.

Augmented reality can be used in a variety of contexts, it can help you live rich and full experiences in your everyday life, such as shopping and leisure, or improve working performance, increase productivity, and reduce costs and human errors.

For example, a customer in a clothing store can experience trying on some clothes without wearing them. Through augmented reality, there’s no need to go to the dressing room, or queue, or waste time changing clothes. Simply go in front of a specific mirror that uses AR technology and check the fit of any piece of clothing.

In this case AR is able to bring to life a real shop of the future, designed to enhance and speed up the customer experience.

At the same time, augmented reality can become a valuable support for professional activities where highly technical skills are required.

Not only smart glasses and special mirrors. Augmented reality also uses much more common tools, such as smartphones, tablets or wearable devices.

For example, Snapchat has recently added augmented reality to their features with the new lense filters. It uses facial recognition to create a target image of the user’s face, so when it has something to track, it can project digital information onto the face.

The new 3D Paint feature lets users draw in augmented reality. It can be used to draw on your own face using your phone’s front-facing camera, and it also works with the rear-facing camera to draw on objects in the environment.

This is augmented reality: technological tools and artificial intelligence to enrich and improve the perception of reality.

AR Is Not to Be Confused With Virtual Reality (VR). What Is the Difference?

Augmented reality uses technological elements to improve the perception of the surrounding environment. There is nothing invented, simply technology helping to enrich people’s experience of reality. For this reason AR cannot ignore the surrounding environment.

Virtual reality, instead, uses technological tools to create virtual environments, totally detached from the surrounding reality. These environments are generally completely fictional.

In this case, the immersive technology leads those who use it to feel part of this virtual world, without having any connection with the surrounding reality.
