Little Sinopterus jii enters the LPT at the base of the Tapejaridae

Earlier I found this image of a sinopterid with broken wings
as I sought the specimen number in order to nest it in the large pterosaur tree (LPT, 253+ taxa). Lü and Yuan 2005 named it Huaxiapterus ji. Later workers decided it was closer to known specimens of Sinopterus dongi and Sinopterus liui. and so was renamed Sinopterus jii. with a long sought specimen number: GMN 03-11-001.

Reconstructions of the body and skull
enabled scoring of Sinopterus jii as it nested basal to tapejarids. The other two Sinopterus specimens nested basal to the tupuxuarids. Outgroups include other China pterosaurs in the Dsungaripteridae and Shenzoupteridae.

Sinopterus jii is smaller than other sinopterids
and smaller than predecessor dsungaripterid taxa, so it represents phylogenetic miniaturization at the start of yet another pterosaur clade, the Tapejaridae.

The frontal + parietal crest on Sinopterus jii
is distinctive and points to a wider variation than typically imagined for this genus.

Small pterosaurs are usually small adult pterosaurs, 
not juveniles, contra traditional thinking. There are a few notable exceptions here, here and here.
