Uber’s Electric Air Taxi Will Change Traveling Forever  from the Jetsons to countless issues of Popular Mechanics the promise of the flying car has been one of the greatest unfulfilled promises of the future, but now dozens of companies are investing billions of dollars to make that future a reality. Not just in some ambiguous near future, but as soon as 2023 in cities like Los Angeles, Dallas, Melbourne, Orlando, and Tokyo. In January of 2020 Uber and partner, Hyundai unveiled their air taxi concept in a multirotor electric vertical take-off and landing craft. Since then the stakes have only gotten higher with companies like Japan’s Sky Drive Inc with massive investment from Toyota have tested a manned flight and South Korea performing a test of their air taxi concept over the skies of Seoul with bags of rice on board. German company Lilium has begun work on a $25 million ‘vertiport’ in Orlando with the hopes of scheduling flights out as soon as 2025 and Japan hoping to put the Sky Drive concept into commercial practice by 2023. These are lofty plans for companies that have yet to put together a working concept much less one that can be certified for a commercial passenger flight. With early applications requiring an onboard pilot, prices will be an issue. If the price of a ride is too high it’s possible that the adoption rate won’t be high enough to make this anything other than a luxury for the well to do meaning that the air taxi will have little effect on targeted issues like congestion and pollution. If those obstacles can be overcome, however, the air taxi industry could be worth as much as $1.5 trillion by 2040, and Uber is making as many partners as it can to be at the forefront of this new frontier.
