Sinornithomimus enters the LRT next to giant Deinocheirus

Sinornithomimus dongi
(Kobayashi and Lü 2003 IVPP-V11797-10; Late Cretaceous, 92 mya; 2.5m; Figs. 1, 2) was a mid-sized ornithomimid found as a fossil in a flock. Distinct from prior cladograms, the large reptile tree (LRT, 1843 taxa, subset Fig. 3) nests this taxon with Deinocheirus (Figs 4, 5), a giant, sail-back theropod omitted in prior analyses. The lateral expansion of the maxilla and the loss of the retroarticular process in Deinocheirus had their genesis in smaller Sinornithomimus (among many other more subtle traits).

Figure 4. The skull of Deinocheirus. Note how the mandible does not completely close cranially when the anterior tips touch. I wonder if this was a sieving organ lined with baleen-like structures? That hypothesis goes with the very deep mandible and the equal lengths of both upper and lower jaws.

One thing leads to another…
Earlier we were looking at tiny Shuvuuia, a Cretaceous tick-bird on coeval Deinocheirus (Figs. 4, 5). Then, one specimen attributed to Shuvuuvia nested with the ornithomimid, Gallimimus. in the LRT. Then other ornithomimids were added to the LRT, one of them, Sinornithomimus (Figs. 1, 2), nested with Deinocheirus for the first time.

A gentle reminder
when you keep adding taxa to your own phylogenetic analysis, soon your cladogram will tell you which taxa are in the inclusion set and which taxa are unrelated despite convergent traits.
