Almadasuchus: a bigger basal crocodylomorph like Junggarsuchus
Too little is known of Almadasuchus
(Museo Paleontol´ogico Egidio Feruglio (MPEF) PV 3838) to add it to the large reptile tree (LRT, 1996 taxa). But we can still make comparisons to more completely known taxa, like Junggarsuchus (Fig. 1).
From the Pol et al. 2103 abstract:
“Phylogenetic analysis focused on the origin of Crocodyliformes places Almadasuchus as the sister group of Crocodyliformes, supported by synapomorphic features of the skull.
From the Pol et al. 2013 text:
“the sequence of transformations leading from the typical basal archosaurian skulls of ‘sphenosuchians’ to the tightly sutured braincase-quadrate-palate complex of crocodyliforms is still poorly understood, with only the late Middle Jurassic Chinese form Junggarsuchus providing some information (Clark et al., 2004).”
From the Pol et al. 2013 text continiued:
“Phylogenetic analysis places Almadasuchus as the sister group to Crocodyliformes, closer to this clade than the advanced late Middle Jurassic ‘sphenosuchian’ Junggarsuchus.”
By contrast
the LRT nests Junggarsuchus at the base of the Crocodylomorpha, which nests it at the base of the Archosauria close to Gnathovorax and Herrerasaurus at the base of the Dinosauria.
Both Pol et al. and the LRT
nest Pseudhesperosuchus at the base of the Crocodylomorpha and members of the Eusuchia at the most derived nodes. The taxa between these two do not nest in the same order. Apparently Pseudhesperosuchus is the phylogenetic outgroup taxon. No other outgroup taxon is mentioned. The LRT includes outgroup taxa back to Ediacaran worms.
