Cute little, late-surviving, Late Jurassic Alligatorellus: sister to an armored herbivore, basal to a Late Triassic enigma and all extant crocs in the LRT
A small, short-snouted quadrupedal crocodylomorph,
looking like a baby, Alligatorellus beaumonti (Figs 1,2 ) enters the large reptile tree (LRT, 2173 taxa, Fig 3) next to the armored herbivore, Armadillosuchus and basal to all larger, quadrupedal, aquatic, long-snouted and extant crocodylomorphs.
Looking more like a pet or a hatchling than an ancestor,
Alligatorellus (Figs 1, 2) was small enough and generalized enough to link itself to several later taxa that were anything but generalized. A phylogenetic successor, Late Triassic Dyoplex, indicates Alligatorellus is a Late Jurassic late survivor of an earlier radiation sometime in the Triassic.
Alligatorellus beaumonti (Gervais 1871; Late Jurassic) was found in Solnhofen marine limestones. It is a small, short-snouted, primitive carnivore, closely related to herbivorous Armadillosuchus and basal to all yellow and amber taxa in figure 3.
