Looks like this Coccosteus preserved a flipped flipper
Yesterday’s post on this same specimen
(Fig 1) was trashedbecause it had not gone through a thorough DGS tracing and LRT scoring. Mistakes were discovered that affected the headline.
The elation and frustration
in dealing with the fish subset of the large reptile tree (LRT, 2308 taxa) keeps rising and falling. Notably Coccosteus (Fig 1) seems to be at the center of several issues. It seems to be close to the origin of catfish, sharks and spiny sharks, along with a clade or two of specialized placoderms. That’s why I’ve turned to scoring several specimens of Coccosteus, hoping to untangle and understand this crossroad in fish phylogeny.
Here an overlooked flipper (fin)
seems to have been preserved atop the thoracic armor in this specimen attributed to Coccosteus (Fig 1). The third frame returns the flipper to its in vivo position.
