Nonvolant Jurassic Eurycormus joins the flying fish clade

According to Wikipedia,
“Eurycormus is an extinct genus of prehistoric bony fish that lived from the Callovian stage of the Middle Jurassic epoch to the early Tithonian stage of the Late Jurassic epoch.”

According to Arratia and Shchulze 2007,
“Eurycormus belongs to the Teleosteomorpha,”

That’s a rather generalized assessment. Teleosteomorpha include all teleosts and their closest extinct relatives. So, no last common ancestor provided. Tiny Triassic Prohalecites is listed as the oldest known teleostomorph.

According to the LRT
Eurycormus used to nest with Elops, but now nests basal to flying flsh (Fig 1). Prohalecites is not related.

These are the sort of small changes that continue in the ‘housekeeping’ that is steadily improving the fish subset of the LRT. There is now light at the end of this long tunnel. This appears to be a novel hypothesis of interrelationships. If not, please send a citation so I can promote it here.
