Tembeassu: an odd and rare extant knifefish enters the LRT
This taxon has free-floating premaxillary teeth
without a premaxilla to root them in. These appear anterior to the traditional premaxillae.
The prefrontals overlap medially,
like buttons on a coat, semi-sealing the typical catfish dorsomedial split.
The dentary teeth do not erupt from the margin
but from a lower inner shelf.
There is no indication of an orbit.
Nor is there any indication of a caudal fin.
Unlike other knifefish, this one has an overbite.
Like other knifefish, this one is also electric.

When added to the LRT
Tembeassu (Fig 1) nested with the other tested electric knife fish, Gymnotus, so no surprises.
