Two ‘ugly’ fish find each other in the LRT
Ugly?
Well… they’re not pretty. They also look pugnacious. Their facial bones are overgrown (Figs 1–3) like a prize fighter who has seen too many fists.

A specimen referred to Wadeichthys
(but distinct from and nesting apart from the holotype in the LRT) has been difficult to understand. Could be I did not want to look at it.
?Wadeichthys oxyops
(Waldman 1971; image from Long 1995 p150; 12cm long; Early Cretaceous, Koonwara Fm, Australia, museum # to come) This taxon is related to the extant white croaker, Genyonemus (Fig 3), and the piranha, Serrasalmus, all members of the herring (Clupea) family.

” data-medium-file=”https://pterosaurheresies.files.wordpress.com/2024/01/wadeichthys-face-insitu588.jpg?w=285″ data-large-file=”https://pterosaurheresies.files.wordpress.com/2024/01/wadeichthys-face-insitu588.jpg?w=584″ class=”wp-image-84399 size-full” src=”https://pterosaurheresies.files.wordpress.com/2024/01/wadeichthys-face-insitu588.jpg” alt=”Figure 1. Similarly, Genyonemus,
the more familiar extant white croaker, an extant marine bony fish, has bounced like a red-headed stepchild from node to node without making a close match, until now. Now they both nest with the most pugnacious fish of their size, Serrasalmus, the piranha, and a deep sea cousin, the fangtooth, Anoplogaster, a fish that probably takes the prize.

Genyonemus lineatus
originally Leiostomus lineatus Ayers 1855, up to 15cm) is the extant white croaker, a schooling marine fish of the shallow waters of the Eastern Pacific. Traditionally it is related to the Moorish Idol, Zanclus. Here it shares more traits with Early Cretaceous Wadeichthys. Note the bars reinforcing the lacrimal (tan), postorbital (amber) and preoperculum (light yellow). This fish has a face like a catcher’s mask.
