Coryphaena, the mahi-mahi, vs Malacanthus, the tile fish
Another short one today,
as the graphics (Fig 1) tell this tale.
Note the similarity
of a Coryphaena (mahi-mahi) juvenile to a Malacanthus (tilefish) adult (Fig 1).

It is easy to tell
that these two taxa are closely related. Try telling that to the LRT in the absence of juvenile skeletal data. Metamorphosis and neotony have made understanding fish taxonomy and systematics difficult (especially for the home-schooled), but not impossible.
First: recognize the problem. Then: resolve the issue. Keep studying.
In phylogenetic analysis
two taxa need not look extremely similar to nest together, just more similar than any competing taxon. The software will tell you when you’ve reached that goal (full resolution) in every instance across the spectrum of 493 taxa (= the fish subset of the LRT).
