How human is the hand of Homo naledi?

Very human,
is the answer.

Kivell et al 2015
described “The hand of Homo Naledi” (Fig 1), but they did not include a hand from Homo sapiens (Fig 2) for comparison. Nor did the authors apply PILs to their hand skeleton. PILs are helpful to compare joint alignments and misalignments in extremities while helping one see the Bauplan of phalangeal proportions as a whole unit, as they flex and extend.

Both oversights are repaired here.

Please note for yourself
the subtle proportional differences between the two manus examples (Figs 1, 2). The two are very close in every proportion.

Homo naledi lived ~300mya.
Wikipedia reports, “their classification with other Homo species remains unclear.” H naledi has a much smaller cranial capacity than humans.
