Paleocene Protictis now nests with extant Prionodon in the LRT

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Only the front half of the skull is known
from Paleocene Protictis (Fig 1). Here, with DGS colors added it is finally compared to the extant linsang, Prionodon , which is related to the extant common genet, Genetta.

Evolutionary changes are few considering the intervening 60 million years between Protictis and Prionodon.

Protictis haydenianus
(formerly Didymictis Cope 1882, Middle Paleocene ~60 mya, ~75 cm in length, is known from a partial skull. Close to Prionodon, Protictis was among the first civets = basal Carnivora to descend from the trees following the extinction of the dinosaurs.

Prionodon linsang
(Hardwicke 1821; 35cm + 36cm tail) is the extant banded linsang. This nocturnal predator feeds on birds, snakes and rats. Note the long neck here emphasized by the position of the pectoral limbs.
