Revisiting the rhino Rostriamynodon: now an oreodont
Housekeeping in the LRT
continues to be a learning experience.
According to Wang et all 2016,
“the earliest known unequivocal rhinocerotoids from Asia, represented by Tripolopus, Rostriamynodon (Fig 1), and Fostercooperia totadentata, occurred nearly simultaneously in the early Middle Eocene Irdinmanhan, which is correlative to the North American Uintan.”

Rostriamynodon has been a taxon nesting with rhinos in the LRT
since 2020. That followed traditions and textbooks. As of today Rostriamynodon nests as a large oredont, close to Agriochoerus antiquus. When brought together (Fig 1) the resemblance (and matrix scoring) is unequivocal.
Rostriamynodon grangeri
(Wall and Manning 1986; AMNH 107635; Eocene) was originally considered amynodontid rhino. In the LRT it nests with oreodonts like Agriochoerus antiquus. Note the shape of the nasals and the anterior extension of the frontals along with the wide molars and the molarized premolars.
