J.D. Power Survey: EV Apps Are Improving
The 2025 U.S. OEM EV App Report by J.D. Power highlights significant trends and challenges in the electric vehicle (EV) mobile app landscape, based on a survey of 1,966 U.S. EV owners conducted in March–April 2025.
Key Findings:
- Increased App Usage: Nearly one-third (32%) of non-Tesla EV owners now use their app on every drive, up from 17% in 2024. Tesla owners show even higher engagement, with 79% using the app on every drive, up from 69% the previous year.
- App Speed and Satisfaction: Speed remains the top driver of satisfaction. Tesla users expect faster response times (1–2 seconds) and report higher satisfaction scores (7.9 out of 10) compared to non-Tesla users (5.5).
- Connectivity Issues: Connectivity problems persist, with 37% of non-Tesla users experiencing issues like lost connections or delayed updates, a slight improvement from 40% in 2024. Tesla has significantly reduced connectivity complaints to 19% from 35% the previous year.
- Feature Awareness and Usage: While over 70% of users desire features like charge scheduling and trip planning, many non-Tesla users have not utilized these functionalities. For instance, 43% have never scheduled a charge, and 54% have never used in-app payment for public charging.
- Evolving Feature Desirability: Interest in advanced features is growing. Adjusting driver profiles (e.g., valet or guest mode) saw a 6.3 percentage point increase in desirability. Other features like remote window control and smartphone key access also gained interest.
The report evaluated apps from 46 automotive brands across the U.S., China, and Europe, providing insights into user experience and areas for improvement in EV mobile applications.
