Unarmored armadillo ancestors in the LRT
Short one today
as the graphics (Figs 1,2) tell the tale.
Figure 1. An extinct armadillo, Holmesina, and its unarmored ancestors back to tiny Asioryctes.

Figure 1. An extinct armadillo, Holmesina, and its unarmored ancestors to scale back to tiny Asioryctes. Only Asioryctes had a true canine. The others had a canine-like premolar transformed in Holmesina into a flat crushing tooth.
Macrotis is a living marsupial
known as a bilby – a late survivor of a much earlier ?Mesozoic radiation. Asioryctes is from the Middle Cretaceous (Albanian Campanian).

According to Wikipedia,
“Holmesina is an extinct genus of pampathere, a group of armadillo-like xenarthrans that were distantly related to extant armadillos.”
By contrast
in the large reptile tree (LRT, 2338 taxa) Holmesina is either an armadillo (Dasypus) ancestor (or the two had an unknown armored last common ancestor). In the LRT Leptictis (Figs 1, 2) is that known and tested last common ancestor. It had a convex arched spine, retained in Holmesina.
