It’s 3000 years ago and you just found the skeleton of a giant dragon in the wastelands
Some of you paleontologists already know
where this post is going…
Figure 1. A basilosaurus skeleton in situ from Northern Egypt has a strong similarity to that of a traditional Chinese dragon (Fig 2).

Figure 1. A basilosaurus skeleton in situ from Northern Egypt has a strong similarity to that of a traditional Chinese dragon (Fig 2).
According to Studycli.org,
“No one knows exactly when legends about dragons first originated, but the symbol dates back to at least 3000 BCE. According to one theory, the legendary Chinese dragon evolved out of ancient totem-worship practices. Ancient people may have created dragons by combining the attributes of several creatures like tigers, snakes, eagles, and carp.”
Or maybe a visitor from Egypt told the Chinese court that he saw, or heard about, giant sinuous Basilosaurus skeletons weathering out of desert sands (Fig 1).
An attempt at fleshing out such a skeleton in the imagination
would have recovered a traditional dragon shape (Fig 2).
Figure 2. Traditional Chinese dragon. Compare to the skeleton in figure 1.

And then there’s that giant skull
(Fig 3) with its pointed snout and wicked teeth, probably crumbling as you remove the overburden of loose sand to see whatever was left to see.
If you found this, you would surely tell everyone you knew. One day the word would get out. Surely the subject would come up whenever you, or someone you told, were trying to impress a dignitary, perhaps in the Chinese court, or wherever else stories of ancient dragons from the wastelands were celebrated.

Basilosaurus means ‘king lizard’.
“Fossils attributed to the type species B. cetoides were discovered in the southeastern United States. They were originally thought to be of a giant reptile, hence the suffix “-saurus”.
But, you knew that anyway. The point is: basilosaurs are difficult to understand if you know nothing about them from the get go, say 3000 years ago.
