The stickleback has bigger and faster marine relatives
Thanks to
the large reptile tree (LRT, 2338 taxa) the freshwater, brackish water and marine stickleback, Gasterosteus, is now linked to the queenfish, Scomeromorus and to the mackerel, Scomberoides (Fig 1).

According to Wikipedia – Stickleback:
“They were thought to be related to the pipefish and seahorses but are now thought to be more closely related to the eelpouts and sculpins.”
Sticklebacks are small fish
with few growing past 3 inches (7.5cm) in length. Apparently it is the product of phylogenetic miniaturization = serial precocial sexual maturity.
The stickles are dorsal fin spines
lacking much membrane between them. The hard-to-see pelvic fin is likewise reduced to just a spine.
Note similar spine-like structures on the dorsal fin area of Scomberomorus and Scomberoides (Fig 1).
