Tropical timings: study finds evidence of Earth’s long and short eccentricities having a 3:13 ratio, as per Talkshop posts
We put this idea forward in 2025 in a post on Earth’s two eccentricity cycles. For more background to the brief post below, see that one.

The paper is from a Chinese petroleum institute and has a long title, but the first three words are ‘Astronomically Forced Cyclicity’ which is our interest here. From the abstract:
‘Sliding spectral analysis indicates an alternating pattern of increasing and decreasing sedimentation rates. Based on the identified orbital signals, 12 fourth-order sequences and 52 fifth-order cycles were recognized.’ [bold added]
Later the paper says: ‘In this study, the most stable Milankovitch component—the 405 kyr long eccentricity cycle—served as the primary tuning target. Accordingly, the cycle thicknesses associated with long and short eccentricity forcing were used to delineate fourth-order and fifth-order sequence boundaries, respectively, as illustrated in Figure 10.’ [bold added]
So the long and short eccentricity periods are in a 12:52 ratio, which reduces (by a factor of 4) to 3:13, as shown in our graphic of Earth’s orbital parameters from the 2025 post:
This also suggests the precession cycles ratio which we also believe is 3:13 (3 perihelion = 13 apsidal) is likely to work, the link being that 16 apsidal precessions = 1 long eccentricity in the graphic. Note that LEC*AP = SEC*PP (result: 13²*144 in Fibonacci numbers) in terms of occurrences, with 103K in the centre being the geometric mean of those numbers.
NB where the authors say 405 kyr long eccentricity cycle, we propose a ~412 kyr one, similar to that used by Prof. Jose Rial (see the 2025 Talkshop post for more). This fits the 13:3 orbital patterns better in our method, as the short eccentricity we have is 95.15~ kyr (100 kyr in the Chinese paper, but that doesn’t work with their 12:52 long:short ratio).
