The number of Indian organizations that have experienced a significant cyber incident in the past three years is large enough to make the question of cyber preparedness urgent rather than theoretical. Ransomware affecting manufacturing operations, data breaches at financial services firms, supply chain compromises affecting technology companies, and targeted attacks on critical infrastructure have produced real operational and financial consequences. And yet the majority of mid-market Indian organizations have not conducted a structured cyber risk assessment in the past 12 months.

Second, confusion about what assessment involves: the term ‘cyber risk assessment’ is applied to services ranging from a half-day questionnaire exercise to a 12-week technical and organizational evaluation. The breadth of this range makes price and scope comparison difficult and contributes to the perception that the services on offer are more similar than they are.

Third, skill availability: according to NASSCOM’s India Cybersecurity Report, India has fewer than 15,000 professionals qualified to conduct structured cyber risk assessments at the standard required by ISO 27001, NIST CSF, or comparable frameworks, against an estimated organizational demand that exceeds 100,000 assessments annually. This supply shortage drives up cost for quality assessment services and creates market space for lower-quality alternatives that do not deliver equivalent rigor.

What a Genuine Cyber Risk Assessment Service Includes

A cyber risk assessment service that delivers actionable security improvement addresses four domains in an integrated analysis. Threat landscape analysis identifies the threat actor types most likely to target the organization based on its industry, size, geographic presence, and technology profile. Asset inventory and classification determines which digital assets exist, which are business-critical, and which are externally exposed. Vulnerability and control assessment identifies gaps between the organization’s current security controls and the controls required to protect its critical assets against the identified threats. Risk quantification translates these gaps into business impact estimates that support investment prioritization.
