Tyrannosaurus rex "Gus" Shatters Records, Becoming Most Expensive Dinosaur Fossil Ever Sold
A 67-million-year-old Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton made history this week, selling for an astonishing $50.1 million (£37.4 million) at a Sotheby’s auction in New York. The colossal predator, standing over 12 feet (3.8 meters) tall and stretching 38 feet long, is considered one of the largest and most complete T. rex specimens ever discovered. With 183 fossil bone elements recovered, Gus is approximately 61% complete by bone count. The skeleton features an exceptionally preserved skull with a 54-inch length, showcasing all six dentitions and brutal bite marks, suggesting a life of fierce combat or scavenging.

A Monumental Discovery in South Dakota
Gus was unearthed in 2021 on a remote ranch in Harding County, South Dakota. The dinosaur takes its name from Gary “Gus” Licking, the late cattle rancher who owned the land where the remarkable find was made. Excavated over three summers by commercial fossil outfit Theropoda Expeditions, the specimen required an additional three years of meticulous laboratory work to prepare and mount.
