Previously Unknown Maya Settlement in Yucatán Revealed

Archaeologists carrying out a dig have found and preserved a previously unknown Maya settlement next to the Progreso Multimodal Terminal located in Yucatán, Mexico. K’oxol Ja’ II is a 2,257-square-meter (24,294-square-foot) site with 21 structures and natural features from a community which seems to have been primarily residential. Ceramic evidence indicates occupation from around 400 BC to AD 900, spanning the regional Preclassic to the Late Classic. Rather than another palace or temple complex, of which many have been discovered in the region, this find opens a window onto ancient Maya daily life among people who left no written account of themselves.

A Maya Settlement Built for Everyday Life
According to a recent bulletin published by the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), K’oxol Ja’ II was discovered by the archaeologists in 2025 during archaeological rescue operations related to the construction of the Maya Cargo Train project. However, the news only came out in August 2026 when INAH shared the information.
