The Anatomy of Invisible Surveillance Over Ordinary Americans

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Imagine an ordinary suburban resident named John. He faithfully pays his electricity bills, renews his driver’s license on time, and regularly visits the doctor through his Medicaid coverage. John considers himself someone who cares about privacy. He doesn’t use social media, carefully reads the terms of service, and never installs apps from unknown companies. However, one morning he finds immigration agents at his door who know exactly who stayed overnight at his house, who he shares his Wi-Fi with, and what medical procedures he underwent last week. John became the target of a police raid not because he committed a crime, but because his routine activities were collected, analyzed, and evaluated by an algorithm he didn’t even know existed. Welcome to an era where AI rules your life.

The main problem with how privacy is perceived today is the belief that our data is protected until the moment we check the consent box. In reality, tech giants like Palantir don’t need your permission at all. Their key products, such as the Foundry civilian platform and the Gotham system for intelligence agencies, operate on the principle of software-defined data integration. These platforms do not collect information from scratch; rather, they serve as a massive interface that connects to thousands of existing government and commercial databases.

Your digital profile is built from information you are forced to provide simply to fully function in society. The tax authority, traffic cameras operated by transportation departments, utility companies, and commercial data brokers track each of your move on a daily basis. The most striking evidence of this was a lawsuit filed in summer of 2026 by a coalition of U.S. attorneys general. It has come to light that the federal health insurance program Medicaid illegally shared the medical records of millions of patients with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). This highly sensitive data—including information on legal U.S. citizens—was instantly processed by Palantir’s algorithms, not being even close to having a court order or patient consent.

The scale of this government “data collecting” is staggering. By the end of the fourth quarter of 2025, Palantir’s revenue from U.S. government contracts had grown by 66%, reaching $570 million. In early 2026, the company signed an unprecedented $1 billion contract with the Department of Homeland Security. Customs (CBP), Police (ICE), and even the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) gained access to these algorithms.

Inside Palantir’s servers, dry columns of numbers from your medical records and water bills are transformed into a coherent portrait of your identity. The platform uses semantic ontology that automatically establishes connections between objects, people, and events. The algorithm doesn’t just store information; it analyzes the digital footprint of your surroundings. The machine knows exactly who you’ve come into contact with on public transportation, who your neighbors are, and who your relatives are. AI now knows absolutely everything about you.

Even a conscious decision to avoid using digital technologies won’t save you from being caught in this net. The system is capable of de-anonymizing a person through the digital footprints of their loved ones or colleagues, using the principle of cross-referencing. Moreover, artificial intelligence perceives the complete absence of a digital footprint in an adult as an anomaly, automatically raising the profile’s suspicion level. Thus, the machine replaces the traditional presumption of innocence with a mathematical probability of a threat.

Cross-analysis technologies are already being actively used on the streets of American cities. In 2025, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) signed a $30 million contract with Palantir to implement a new database called ImmigrationOS and a tool called ELITE. On the officer’s screen, it appears as an interactive map that integrates data from the Ministry of Health, social services, and dozens of other agencies. All a government agent has to do is highlight any district with the cursor, and the program will instantly display files on everyone located there, filtered by background and criminal history.

The most alarming feature of ELITE is its ability to automatically generate an address reliability index. Artificial intelligence uses your tax return, medical history, and electricity bills to mathematically calculate the probability that you are currently at home. Officers no longer need to conduct surveillance or gather evidence using traditional methods. The algorithm acts as both investigator and judge, dispatching armed units to coordinates calculated based on integrated databases. Enormous budgets are at stake. The total value of Palantir’s contracts with ICE has already exceeded $248 million, which means the system must constantly demonstrate its “effectiveness.”

The scale of the surveillance became so evident that Congress was forced to respond. In February 2026, Senators Ed Markey, Pramila Jayapal, Jeff Merkley, and Ron Wyden introduced the ICE Out of Our Faces Act to the Senate. The bill was introduced after internal ICE documents were revealed through court orders: since 2014, the agency had been relying on Palantir platforms to track cell phones via cell towers, passport data, and nearly five million records of international students in the SEVIS system.

The bill proposes to radically dismantle the existing surveillance infrastructure. Lawmakers are calling for a strict ban on the use of any biometric surveillance systems—including facial recognition—by immigration enforcement agencies (ICE). Government agencies are required to delete all collected data within thirty days of the bill’s enactment. The bill blocks funding for surveillance programs and gives citizens the right to sue the government for being unlawfully targeted by these algorithms.

Society and lawmakers recognized the true scale of the looming threat just on time. This is a sober and appropriate response to a technology capable of fundamentally altering the very nature of human free will. It’s worth pausing for a moment to reconsider: what would happen if tomorrow the authorities gained access to a tool capable of subtly adjusting your behavioral patterns? The system knows everything about you — from your medical history to the emotional tone of your messages — and is capable of subtly nudging you toward the right decisions. You’ll start voting for the right candidate, buying what benefits the system, going where the algorithm directs you, and choosing your social circle as dictated by the machine — all while believing that these are your own free choices.

The illusion of privacy irrevocably collapsed. The senators’ bill is a desperate attempt to slam shut a Pandora’s box that has already been opened. The technology itself isn’t going anywhere. Database integration algorithms have been written, tested, and deeply embedded in the government apparatus. Corporations have proven their ability to extract billions of dollars from the mathematical processing of your every move.

You can try to protect yourself. You can delete your social media profiles, get rid of your smartphone, and switch exclusively to paying with cash. The mathematical model will account for this step. Artificial intelligence will instantly flag your attempt to disappear as a suspicious anomaly. Your rejection of technology will serve as the algorithm’s primary evidence of unreliability and will automatically raise your risk index.
