Pinniped origins in the LRT 2026
Long, low, robust, weasel-like placentals
presently nest closest to the base of the pinnipeds = seals, sea lions and walruses. These include Potamotherium, Melivora and Eupleres (Fig 1) in the large reptile tree (LRT, 2340 taxa).
That means river and marine otters were not pre-seals.
That means river and marine otters are aquatic by convergence.
That’s the current state in the LRT, subject to misinterpretation, as always.
The skull of the honey badger,
Mellivora (Fig 2), demonstrates strong similarities to the smaller fossil Potamotherium (Fig 2) and the extant harbor seal, Phoca (Fig 2).
According to Wikipedia,
“Pinnipeds belong to the suborder Caniformia of the order Carnivora; their closest living relatives are musteloids (weasels, raccoons, skunks and red pandas), having diverged about 50 million years ago.”
So that’s a broad selection of taxa based on genomics, not phenomics = traits used by the LRT and includes fossil taxa, which narrows things down to Potamotherium.
The LRT models a hypothesis of interrelationships
that now needs to be confirmed, modified or refuted by others. Since that rarely to never happens in paleontology, don’t hold your breath waiting for that second, third and fourth study.
