2,500-Year-Old Solar Observatory Confirmed in Mexico
The ancient settlement of Tetelihtic in Puebla’s Sierra Norte was designed to watch the Sun, archaeologists now say, confirming the existence of a solar observatory more than 2,500 years old. The finding, announced by Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), is the earliest confirmed Group E astronomical complex identified outside the Maya region. Its carefully placed platforms appear to have tracked the agricultural year, including the start of the calendar in February and the harvest season in October.
A Solar Observatory Hidden in the Landscape
The site, also known as Tetelictic or “Los Cerritos,” lies in the municipality of Teteles de Ávila Castillo. An earlier report by Archaeology Magazine described the settlement as a ceremonial center with pyramidal structures dating back more than 3,000 years. The new interpretation comes from comparing its urban plan with Mesoamerican sites and observing how the buildings frame the surrounding mountains and the astronomical horizon.
The observatory sits east of the Great Plaza and consists of a square courtyard flanked by two platforms. The eastern platform is about 90 meters long and 40 meters wide, while the smaller western platform measures approximately 46 by 27 meters and served as the viewing point. As Heritage Daily reported, the arrangement resembles the famous Group E complex at Uaxactún in Guatemala, although the Puebla complex is about twice its size.
