Colossal Ramesses II Statues Unearthed in Egypt’s Nile Delta
A chance discovery outside a village home has led archaeologists to two colossal royal statues and inscriptions linked to Ramesses II, one of ancient Egypt’s most celebrated rulers. The find at Behbeit El-Hagar in the Nile Delta includes a 1.6-meter-high head that may once have belonged to an 8.5-meter monument. It also raises a larger question: what stood at this important religious site centuries before its famous Temple of Isis was built?
A Discovery that Began with One Inscribed Stone
According to the Egypt Museum announcement and reports by Heritage Daily and Arkeonews, a resident noticed an inscribed block while working on land in front of his home. He alerted local antiquities officials, prompting rescue excavations by Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities. The team then uncovered two monumental sculptures and a pink-granite block bearing royal titles.
