Gold Earrings and Aurelian Coin Found in Child’s Grave
A pair of gold earrings and a coin struck for Emperor Aurelian have been found in a child’s grave at Stara Zagora, Bulgaria, offering an unusually intimate glimpse of burial in Roman Thrace. The discovery was released by Regional History Museum of Stara Zagora and reported by the Bulgarian News Agency. Rescue excavations by the Museum uncovered a necropolis of 135 graves, dating from the late second to the fifth century AD. In the child’s grave, the head faced west and the feet east; the only recorded grave goods were two gold earrings and one coin.
The earrings are strikingly well preserved, but they do not by themselves identify the child or prove that the family belonged to the city’s elite. Other Roman jewelry finds from Bulgaria show how personal ornaments could also reflect wider fashions across the empire.
