Researchers confirm altermagnetism, a magnetic phase that could advance spintronic memory
Researchers at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, Stanford University, the University of Notre Dame, the Walther-Meissner-Institute (Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities), the Technical University of Munich and the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) have reported conclusive experimental evidence of altermagnetism, a third type of magnetism that sits between ferromagnetism and antiferromagnetism.
For decades, only two types of magnetism were recognized in materials without external influence. In ferromagnets, all the electron spins point in the same direction. In antiferromagnets, the spins alternate and cancel each other out. In recent years researchers have found materials that show features of both, such as alternating spins with no net magnetization together with the ability to carry spin currents. In 2022, such materials were given the name altermagnets. The idea is that their spins alternate like those of an antiferromagnet, but the crystal lattice around the “up” spins is rotated relative to the lattice around the “down” spins, which breaks symmetry and gives rise to their unusual behavior.
