Spaceweather.com puts it this way: ‘On Oct. 4th, Saturn will be at opposition–directly opposite the sun in the sky. Opposition does something marvelous to Saturn’s rings. It causes them to brighten dramatically (animated image here). The phenomenon is called “The Opposition Effect”.’ – Arnholm’s solar simulator confirms the date, here. Likewise the date confirms the accuracy of the solar simulator (online since 2008), which we use in our ‘tropical timings’ posts.

Saturn’s back this season, and so are its rings! – says Sky & Telescope.

Last year’s near-edgewise presentation flattened the ring plane into a one-dimensional line. This razor-blade appearance was eye-catching, but it also prepared us for the pleasure of seeing the rings tip open again.

Saturn arrives at opposition on Oct. 4th, when it pairs up with Earth on the same side of the Sun.

Located 1.26 billion km (784 million miles) away in central Pisces, the gas giant’s tilted rings and closer proximity to Earth this season compared to its last will boost the planet’s brightness to magnitude 0.3 and expand its girth to nearly 20″ (19.7″ to be exact). Saturn has also gained nearly 5° in declination over the year, nudging it higher in the sky.

First-time viewers of Saturn in the telescope cannot not react. Most agree it hardly looks real. No wonder! The planet’s unique ball-and-ring form has few analogs in the everyday natural world.
