In this, the second of Margery Allingham’s Campion novels after he was introduced in The Crime at Black Dudley, she really found her feet. This is very much Campion’s story, from the moment he insists his pet mouse should enter the disappearing cabinet of a magician on a transatlantic liner.
Campion’s role this time round is keeping a threatened American judge alive and his family safe. To do so he brings in friends with a remote country house in Suffolk – but there’s plenty of action in London too, and Lugg makes his entrance as Campion’s entertaining ex-criminal servant and friend.
With this book, Allingham (still only 26) gave Campion full rein to both appear randomly foolish and to prove to be a distinguished plotter – even if one of his attempts is foiled by a newspaper photograph.
Dating back to 1930, this is a genuine period piece with all that implies, including an element of snobbery in its treatment of yokels (a term Allingham has her characters use in some of the books). This doesn’t stop it mostly being a delight, and Allingham manages of a couple of set piece, page turning, plot points.
