Basement Ceiling Installation

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Ryan and I spent last week working on some major projects around the house. It was very needed and was nice to spend some time together getting things done. Ryan got a smoker for Christmas and we spent the week trying it out. I enjoyed the break from cooking our dinners. Ryan smoked a huge ham for us and it was beyond amazing! He also cooked a chicken after marinating it for twenty-four hours…It was soooo good!
While we enjoyed the great food, we were busy working like crazy!
We have a split level home and it has caused us tons of grief over the past four years. We have had this basement renovation going on for quite a while and we recently decided on our approach to the ceiling. I have not shown you many pictures of it along the way because until now we have not had a specific plan for it. All of the wires, cable lines, and phone lines are run between the two floors of our home. Obviously we could not simply put a drywall ceiling up. What if we needed to work on some of the lines or plumbing became an issue? When we moved in, it had a drop ceiling which was simply hideous. That definitely had to go….

We began framework to attach our new ceiling.

This is the mess I was talking about when it came to the lines. Previous owners never eliminated outdated lines and it became a jumbled mess. It looked like a huge rats nest and we were tired of it. In order to make things easier in the future, Ryan spent an entire day rerouting the lines. We removed anything that wasn’t necessary and put the lines in one location neatly. Here’s the end result:

We enclosed the lines in a small narrow frame. Everything got secured and labeled. If we ever have an issue, we know exactly where to start. Had we left them alone and had a problem in the future, we would have to take down large pieces of our ceiling just to locate the one line needed. It took forever, but it was well worth the effort! On Friday, Ryan built a contraption to hold our new beadboard panels in place while he secured them to the new framing. There was absolutely no way I could have held the board straight and made sure all of the lines matched up while he nailed it in place. That stuff is quite heavy!

I balanced the contraption while Ryan placed a sheet on the top. Then we used a jack to raise it to the ceiling. The most difficult part was getting everything lined up correctly. It is time consuming and stressful, but not too bad once you get the hang of it!

And there it is! Our first piece of pretty beadboard ceiling!

By the end of Saturday we had fifty percent of the basement completed. We were sore and exhausted, but so excited about the progress we had made.

After it’s all in place we are caulking the seams, installing trim and giving it all a pretty coat of white paint. I think it will be perfect and well worth the hard work!
