Myths That Will Hinder Your Job Search and How to Debunk Them

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

A guest post by Emma Banks

When someone has spent a large amount of time in the military, the through of making the transition from a military career into a non-military profession can seem overwhelming. Many myths have been perpetuated that serve only to discourage people who are going through this process. Fortunately, resources are available to help debunk these myths, and assist military personnel, and veterans, in making their civilian-career aspirations a reality!

Myth #1: Employers don’t care about applicants
Truth: Although many companies receive large numbers of applications regularly, they understand the importance of attracting the right people for each job. In order to attract the best talent, employers have begun to streamline the application process, as well as offer perks to employees. Many tech-savvy Fortune 500 companies, such as GM, utilize a platform provided by JIBE to allow job seekers to efficiently upload résumés and other documents directly from a computer, smart phone or even their personal tablet. Additionally, many employers offer perks to qualified applicants such as the option to work from home, daycare at the office, and more.

Myth #2: If your military career included time served in a combat zone, employers looking for “consistent” workers will not be interested in hiring you

Truth: While reliable employees are important to all companies, there is no reason for employers to discriminate against you due to time you spent in combat. In fact, it’s illegal to do so. Furthermore, the government has instituted incentive programs to encourage employers to hire veterans who sustained combat-related injuries or who served during specific time periods.

Myth #3: In your résumé or cover letter, you should indicate that you are good at everything
Truth: Why would anyone believe this? No one is good at everything, but everyone has specific strengths and skills. Instead of pretending you can do everything, focus on the great skills you do have and emphasize how they can help better the company you are applying at.

Myth #4: No one is seeking specifically to hire military veterans
Truth: Your military career endowed you with specific training and skill sets that can transfer to various jobs in the private sector. Employers understand this, and many companies specifically seek military veterans in order to fill positions. Additionally, government incentive programs encourage companies to hire veterans. If you need help finding companies that want military veterans, go to VeteranJobListings.com where you will find many job listings and an easy application process.

During the transition from military to civilian life, there will always be a few obstacles along the way – the job search and application process doesn’t have to be one of them! There are many resources available to assist you through this process. When these myths about the transition process are debunked, you’ll find the task much easier than you expected!
