DIY-Drawing Salve: Do you have slivers? Not anymore!

If you’re like most people, you probably have at one time or another gotten a splinter that has been difficult to get out. Either it is really deep and hard to get to or the victim is a small child and they are wiggly and getting them to hold still long enough to get the splinter out is next to impossible. In times like these, it would be really handy to have a jar of drawing salve. When the salve is applied to the afflicted area, it will draw out the splinter and ward against infection. Drawing salve is also helpful for treating insect stings and abscesses.

The salve is easy to make and the ingredients are readily available. Once the ingredients are mixed together the salve can be stored in a glass container.

The ingredients are as follows:
6 tablespoons infused olive oil
2 tablespoons castor oil
2 teaspoons beeswax
3 teaspoons activated charcoal
3 teaspoons clay (kaolin or bentonite, etc)
essential oils: 30 drops lavender, 15 drops tea tree oil

Combine the olive oil, castor oil, and beeswax in a container and place in a pot of simmering water (like a double boiler). It is recommended that you use a container that you don’t mind getting stained, as the charcoal has a tendency to stain. Once the waxes and oils are combined, add the charcoal and clay and mix until combined. Mix in the essential oil and then transfer to a glass jar for storage. This recipe makes enough to fill a one ounce jelly jar. Store the salve in a cool dark place.

To use the salve, just put a small amount on the affected area. Cover with a bandage (to help avoid staining your clothes and other things) and leave on for up to 12 hours. The wash off with soap and water. The salve should draw the splinter out so that it can be effortlessly removed.
