Surprises, a Raffle Blanket and Chickens!

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Yesterday was my only day off from the off farm job.  I didn’t do much around the farm since it is so darn cold.  I spent the day scrubbing the floor (it’s nasty), cooking and writing in the journal.  The weather has been down right crazy here.  Typical winter weather and below freezing temperatures to 55F and sunny then, over night, back down to freezing temps, snow flurries and wind chills.  Like this week for instance… hover around freezing for 4 days and tomorrow it’s supposed to be 51F, Fridays high will be 6F.  This is exactly why I have no bred any rabbits.
Good news for a change, as you noticed already, there are pictures in this post!  No, I didn’t figure out how to make the cheapie phone post pictures.  Rick M sent me a spare laptop he had!  It arrived this morning.  Seriously, I have never had anything this nice in my adult life!  It is amazing and I lack the words to express my gratitude for this wonderful gift.  I made my son uncomfortable because I cried.  He’ll get over it.  Best thing ever, the backspace key works!  LOL
Now for the picture explanations….  New Years eve, I drove 20 miles east and visited a really nice lady who makes my chickens and rabbits set up look like play time.  Cindy P held back 2 dozen eggs from her daily sales so I could try to hatch them out in the middle of winter.  I managed a 50% hatch rate from a 5 year old Styrofoam still air incubator in a drafty, cold house with 2 stock dogs who couldn’t leave it alone.  I lost 2 while they were trying to hatch and a 3rd died before it dried.  9 healthy chicks in the brooder, 2 days old, eating and drinking so I count this as a success!
Of course, the first picture post would not be complete without Sissy goat!  Right on schedule, she knocked on the door for her morning snack.  She’s dried off, waiting for her next round of kids to arrive.  The arrival date is a mystery, just like last time but if I were guessing, I would say early March.  I’m keeping an good eye on her so we don’t have the disaster we had last time.
Here it is, the finished crochet blanket.  This is the raffle blanket.  16 skeins of yarn and 211 hours. Still needs the ends tucked but that’s a 5 minute thing.  Raffle tickets are $10 each and 3 for $25.  I will draw the winner on Valentines Day.  Tickets can be purchased via the paypal link or you can mail me direct for your entry by sending to the farm,

I am fighting the urge to pull all the seed starting supplies out.  It’s almost time!!!  I am ready for spring and this wild, cold weather isn’t helping.  I will be moving the cows to the far back field come spring so I can have a monster huge garden this year.  I’m set up to mulch every bit of it so I won’t have to be weeding 3 hours a day, every day.  New ideas gleaned from what I’ve seen at the farmers markets plus the farm stand to be set up here on the farm.  I’ve recruited a couple local growers so we can establish our own farmers market right here.  Doing this will save us all time and money and comply with the states regulations of “2 or more farmers”, allowing those of us with cottage exemptions to sell everything we offer.  I see this as a “win win” mostly for me, the convenience of having the farm kitchen right here and the time saving from not having to pack up and drive anywhere.  Plus, the more delicate, doesn’t travel well stuff can be offered.  Better cool storage options too.   The traffic (business) I can easily generate just by being on a main highway will also sell the non food items myself and my local friends offer as well.  I look forward to this being the new beginning of a better life!

Eh, I am still struggling some with the divorce and anger issues over it.  The relief of it being over, knowing that I am really all alone and then the resentment over all the ignorant, disrespectful crap that was done to me over the years.  Him showing up here on a Sunday afternoon, while I was at work only for me to find him in his underwear, in my front room, when I got home from work was an infuriating reminder of what a total jerk he was and apparently still is.  The petty little crap he did to me that last few months still chaps me and I know I will never get those personal items he liberated from me back.  I guess it’s why I’m still so angry.  The last few years, not only my spouse, but a few people who gained my confidence via friendship, have behaved in this same, juvenile manner.  I was not raised to behave like that so it angers and annoys me.  Makes it hard to accept friendship since now I am always suspicious of people.  Sad, eh?  Eh, I’ll get over it.  Onward and upward, to bigger and better things!  Eh, GG goat just missed the potty box, onward to more floor scrubbing, yay rah, LOL
