Do you have MRE’s in your food storage?

Are you prepared in the event you have to leave in a hurry? Do you have a Bug-Out -Bag or a 72-hour kit? These packs are made in advance with the intention of being able to grab something when you are in a hurry and you need to have things with you that  will sustain you for at least 72 hours. At Common Sense Homesteading, there are some great tips on what to include in your bag. But what about food? You could go to the store and buy some MREs but they can be kind of spendy and not necessarily tailored to your taste buds. Why not have some MREs that you can make yourself?

By making your own MREs, you not only cut costs but the food will be something that is made just for you by you so you won’t get any surprises in the taste category. This is an especially attractive option if you have finicky eaters in your care.

If you were to make some MREs today, what would you include in it? Share your ideas with us!

We four wheel drive in the mountains a lot. A lot can happen with your vehicle so I make sure we have what we need if we get stuck (don’t let the husband know I used that word). I make large batches of chili and split pea soup, sometimes spaghetti and yes, I use very lean hamburger. I freeze some for meals and put some in the food dryer on fruit roll up trays to dry and then put the contents of each tray into a brn paper lunch sack, roll it up, put in food saver bag and vac seal. These meals along with my kelly kettle and other essentials are kept in a car tote so they can be easily transfered to any vehicle im using in only a moment. Have a fun summer everybody!

Anything you cook can be dried. Just make extra at meal time and put left overs in the dryer overnight. I have had an american harvester dryer for almost 20 years. I love it. It has gone through stages of no use and heavy use. I love having temp control and I like the opaque trays which seem to be standard now.
Temp control is important jerky must have high temps and herbs need cool temps to protect oils and flavor.

Yours are really heavy on the starch. Ramen, pasta, potatoes.

Good idea but the main dish really needs to be something else. From experience, eating starchy foods like that more than 3-4 time a week will mess you up on the insides.

In the vehicle, I keep canned goods. Soup, stew, canned vegetables and fruit. Enough for a week.
