Travel Safely-Avoid Being a Victim of Crime

I don’t know about you, but I love to travel and see the world. There is something magical about discovering a new place or actually being in a place that you’ve only read about. How can you enjoy the sights while staying safe? Here are some ways you can travel safely and avoid being a victim. Let’s follow Larry T. Tourist and Sophia Traveller while they enjoy the sights of a foreign land to see what they can do to be sure they enjoy their trip, shall we?

Hide Your Valuables. Larry leaves the hotel room but he leaves his laptop and passport on the dresser. Hey, the room is locked, he should be okay, right? Wrong. Don’t assume that your valuables will be safe if they are in your room. Make sure that your valuables are locked away in the safe in your room or at the front desk.

Make sure your room is secure. Meanwhile, in Sophia’s room, someone knocks on the door and says that they are from housekeeping. Instead of blindly answering the door, she calls the front desk to verify that the person at the door is who they say they are. Lucky for her, it really is someone from housekeeping and they have some fresh baked cookies. When the person with the cookies leave, Sophia makes sure that the door is completely closed. She also double checks the door when she leaves the room.

Don’t Be Captain Obvious. Larry has a full itinerary today. He has planned out all his routes out for the day and is careful not to pull out his map on street corners. He has also left is loud Hawaiian shirt back home and his fanny pack back in the 90s. When he needs to ask for directions, he goes inside a shop to ask someone there.

Keep your valuables close by.  Sophia is really proud of her $500 purse that she just purchased and she wants everyone to see it. If you are in unfamiliar surroundings, it is better to keep your purse close to your body, maybe even under an article of clothing like a jacket to deter those criminals who would cut the purse straps and run off with your valuables faster than you can say, “But wait! That’s the IT bag of the year!”

Know your surroundings. Larry is busy looking at his phone and making sure he has the perfect status update to tell his friends what a wonderful time he is having. See that lovely French Patiserrie? Perfect Instagram pic. A person who is unaware of his surroundings or seems lost in their own world are more apt to be a victim of a crime. Walk with a purpose and make brief eye contact with those around you. Be aware of what is around you.

Even if you are traveling alone, don’t act like it. Sophia is going solo for this trip but she doesn’t have to advertise it. When she is out and about, she moves with a group of people. She also doesn’t share a lot of information with people. Sometimes she even lets slip that her boyfriend Olaf the Olympic Greco-Roman wrestler is in the shop next door because he has a hobby of collecting heavy blunt objects from different parts of the world.

Enjoy yourself when you travel, just be smart and do some simple things to avoid being a victim of a crime.

What do you do to keep yourself safe when traveling?
