Girl’s Shared Bedroom Renovation + Inspiration

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

The girl’s room renovation is underway! We moved our king bed that was there previously to the “master bedroom” and even though both rooms are TINY, it fits much better in that layout. We now have a blank slate for the girl’s room.

The new girls’ room will need to be multi-functional because both of my daughters (age 1 and 6) will be sharing it. It needs to store their clothing, toys, and homeschool supplies all while maintaining an organized and clutter-free open space in a 12×11 room. Wow. That last sentence truly shows how delusional I’ve become. Or, I’ve been looking at Pinterest too long.

Anyway…

I hope to incorporate a homeschool nook in the right corner of the room (where the toddler bed currently is). The homeschool nook will only be a small desk for my 6 year old, and to utilize vertical space- a tall bookshelf to keep all her books and materials.

Here’s some inspiration I’ve been hoarding:

I love the white walls, warm floor, and pops of color. I adore the bunting and the colorful rug. And that looks like Ikea’s Expedit bookshelf which I have been eyeing, oh, forever.

Here’s a shared room idea for a baby girl and an older sister. Loving the bed in the corner, the lights above it, and of course, the bright pops of color.

Another idea for a darling shared bedroom. Wood floors, bits of color, and white wood-plank walls which is exactly what we will soon have (I’m going with Olympic’s Delicate White).

Here’s the layout I’m picturing:

And here’s what I’m thinking of for the homeschool corner:

Besides the globe, everything is from Ikea. I’m diggin’ that Kallax bookshelf (Did you know Ikea is discontinuing the Expedit?). The Kallax shelving unit is a thinned down version of the Expedit and comes in a gorgeous high-gloss turquoise color. I’m stuck between the turquoise ($90) and the pistachio color ($65). The $25 price difference may make the decision for me, though.

And to use dead space, I plan to hang my daughter’s artwork on the wall behind the bedroom door.

Regarding sleeping arrangements, I hope to find a solid wood twin bed frame on Craigslist for my 6 year old. That way I can paint it any color I choose to match the rest of the room, or, just white.

In the left corner of the room is a sweet little enclave next to the closet. Perfect spot for a crib. I already have a crib (also from Ikea) and thought about hanging bunting or tassels above it similar to this…

At $35, these tassels are handmade by Studio Mucci. Sooo many color combos it’s hard to decide!

Now, on to clothing storage. The more I walkabout the room, the more I think there’s not enough space for a dresser. It’s not that big of a deal cuz I’d like to keep all clothing in the closet anyway. This is the closet as of today…

It needs a lot of help. Like a full facelift with MAC makeup kinda help. I like mirrored sliding doors because of the reflection factor but I would also like to open both doors for full accessibility inside.  Who knows if average closet doors would even fit? Being a trailer from 1972 nothing is average in this place.

Anyway, here some inspiration for kids closet organization…

Okay, now let’s talk about the 5th wall, the ceiling. This is what it currently looks like…

Our ceilings are low, only 7 1/2 feet high and are noticeable throughout the whole house. They are also ugly. Butt ugly. I don’t know what to do with them. Should I paint them white? Should I paint the thin strip some coordinating color? Call me nuts, but I was actually thinking about wallpapering them. Similar to this…

However, it looks hard to do and like my neck would hurt for days. I’m also not sure how the wallpaper would look on the grooves in the panel board. I mentioned wallpapering the ceiling to my husband and he said “no, absolutely not.” But whenever my husband says no it makes me what to do it more. Haha. We’ll see.

Well, that’s it guys (or girls?). I gotta get going, I have walls to prep. I’m not a decorator so your thoughts are highly appreciated. Thanks for reading!
