CHINA’S SECRET SPACE AGENDA THREATENS U.S. SATELLITES

Normally one wouldn’t consider outer space or the Earth’s orbit as a battlefield or a place of interest for military maneuvers. But as time passes by and technology advances, the possibilities of extending the battleground’s area grow exponentially. It won’t be long until the outcome of armed conflicts won’t be settled by direct battle only, but also by annihilating the opponent’s “eyes and ears” in the sky. Information is power, and he who controls it has the upper hand.

Recently (mid 2015) The Pentagon released a shocking report towards the Congress that unveils and identifies many top secret Chinese projects concerning the militarization of the Earth’s orbit. If they happen to succeed, the U.S. military and strategic position will be seriously undermined. The main reason of concern is the usage of an anti-satellite weapon, which has not been agreed upon through any treaty, nor has it been made public so far. The Pentagon report states that China has the fastest growing military space program at the moment and tested several types of anti-satellite weapons, but claimed to have tested something else completely. It’s generally believed that as long as this secretive Chinese military space program continues, there will be a constant threat to every other nation that is not a direct political or military ally of China.

The main concern is that the Chinese arsenal consists of satellite jamming technologies or directed-energy weapons that could take out very efficiently U.S. satellites, rendering communication and surveillance almost impossible; this would gravely tip the scales in case of a military conflict, leaving America defenseless. China’s claims to develop “a satellite program with peaceful purposes” holds no ground, as such devices are meant to debilitate satellite warning systems, GPS satellites and regular communication satellites alike. The first sign of concern happened in 2007, when the Chinese launched a direct rocket towards one of their own satellites, destroying it on impact. But in 2015, technology goes way beyond guided missiles. Transmission jammers or directed-energy weapons could be just as deadly, but twice as silent. Another threat is posed by the existence of fully military armed satellites that can be equipped with “fire-power”, fully guided and able to destroy every single satellite they encounter in orbit. These demonstrations of sheer force are seen as a direct threat to American interests in space. In the Pentagon’s report China has been labeled as a “military threat”, a term that has been used with full responsibility by the U.S. officials.

Even though the obvious has been disclosed time and time again by the Chinese officials, the Pentagon reports on the interception of precise military writings that “emphasize the necessity of ‘destroying, damaging, and interfering with the enemy’s reconnaissance … and communications satellites’”. This serves no other purpose then to “blind and deafen the enemy”. Through this report the Pentagon hopes to be provided with the necessary founding in order to take all the necessary precautions. The threat of the Chinese military space program is the gravest we face today, as this seems to be targeting us directly. Air Force Lt. Gen. Jay Raymond thinks no other satellite in orbit is safe, and the take-down of our means of communications will give China the upper hand in case of an armed conflict, even though our weapons superior to theirs.

The risk is real, the threat is imminent. And it doesn’t come from China alone. Russia is also believed to be building its own top-secret military space program. Despite all of the collective efforts of the Free World, Russia would not abide to international treaty or agreement. It’s a general belief that both China and Russia won’t honor any pre-agreements in case of war. They’re primary targets will be, beyond the shadow of a doubt, the directional satellites and sensors used to guide the missile defense systems, used by the U.S. and the E.U. alike. In the 60s Russia attempted a similar strategy, which (luckily) they have abandoned fast. It was called the “orbital fractional bombardment system” and it relied on the orbiting of nuclear missiles, which would be activated to strike on command. The Pentagon states that this program is being reconsidered today by the Russian strategists.

These truths are unsettling, but we can only prevent by knowing. Whether it will come down to a full-blown military conflict or not, it’s hard to tell. Will we be the victims of foul play? I don’t know. Just hope we’re prepared when we’re hit. Are you prepared?
