SHTF Dog Food, Cheap And Easy (Videos)

(N.Morgan) When preparing for unexpected events, such as disasters or in climate weather and power loss, food loss, one must consider how their pets will fair during such trying and scary times.

One way to ensure your pet will be taken care of at a minimum cost is to make their dog food and treats homemade.

For what it’s worth, dog food is an easy and cheap thing to make… Keep rice, and dehydrated vegetables like peas and carrots. Just boil scrap meats and bones with the rice and vegetables mix. Leave or remove bones and feed.

Making your own pet food is not only cost effective, it is also an excellent way to ensure the health and longevity of your pets. You will know they are getting all of the vitamins, minerals, and nutrients they need to stay active and healthy.

There are tons of different recipes on the internet that offer the maximum health benefits for your dogs and save you money as an added bonus.

Let’s review some of the do and don’t of what foods our dogs can consume.

Foods To Avoid

There are some ingredients which have been shown to cause illness (or death) in some dogs. Included in that list are:

Grapes
Raisins
Onions
Garlic
Chocolate
Artificial sweeteners or artificial fats
Raw meat

Nutritious Foods For Your Dog

These are a list of some basic healthful foods to include in your pets diet. Please consult with your veterinarian prior to making significant changes to your pets diet.

Poultry
Organ meats, liver (don’t overuse)
Eggs
Cultured dairy products such as yogurt, buttermilk, cheese
Complex carbohydrates such as rice, potatoes, beans, legumes
Fiber sources such as bran, fresh vegetables, whole-grains.

Some of these foods may be fine in small “seasoning” quantities but to be sure, always consult with your pet’s veterinarian and follow his/her advise.

*Raw Meat – Raw meats and poultry can contain bacteria, salmonella, or parasites or viruses. Your dog can suffer from food poisoning just as humans can. Only cooking will make these foods safe for consumption.

In an article by Angela Colley, 10 Healthy Homemade Dog Food Recipes and Organic Treats, Angela gives some great recipes to fill your dog’s organic diet menu.

Chicken Jerky:

Ingredients

2 to 4 chicken breasts

Directions

Preheat the oven to 200 degrees Fahrenheit.
Remove any excess fat from the chicken. Turn the chicken breast on its side and use a paring knife to slice the chicken breast into 1/8 inch thick strips.
Set the strips on a baking sheet. Bake for 2 hours.
Check the chicken before removing from the oven. It should be dry and hard, not soft or chewy. Allow the chicken to cool completely before serving.
Store the jerky in an airtight container in the fridge for up to two weeks.

Pro Tip: You can substitute sweet potatoes for the chicken in this recipe. Sweet potatoes make a healthy, vegetarian alternative.

Frozen Yogurt Pops for Dogs

If your dog loves to chase ice cubes around the kitchen, then he’ll love these frozen treats. They’re made from human grade ingredients and include fruit juice and carrots, which give your pup an added vitamin boost. Yogurt has calcium and protein, and can help your dog digest food.

Note that this recipe calls for non-fat yogurt, which is a much healthier alternative to other types of yogurt, especially if your dog is overweight.

Ingredients

6 oz. container of plain, non-fat frozen yogurt
1 cup of no-sugar added fruit juice
1/2 cup of carrots, minced

Directions

Add the yogurt, fruit juice, and carrots into a medium-sized bowl. Stir until the ingredients are smooth and well-blended.
Drop the mixture into the ice cube trays by spoonful.
Freeze until the ingredients are solid.

Pro Tip: Use hard plastic trays instead of the softer rubber ones to make the treats. The treats are easier to remove from a hard tray.

Yes cat’s can be used for dog food, but they must be de-clawed first

        lol none for you.

The most logical and rational thing to do is put them down. You risk not only allowing yourself to starve but them as well.

      Hello Angle#3(prelim),

Charlie here. Your last story was not so hot. One link didn’t work and the other one the buttons didn’t activate. Did you ACTUALLY visit the website you recommend???

Remember what I said about BOOTS on the ground??? Look, I know you are not a full-fledged Angle and maybe you should be one. Come back to the academy and get certified and Charlie will even throw in the boots free for ya!! How’s that for a bargain???

Now, I don’t trust this story of dog food of all things. Did you test it out??? If you were a true dog lover you’d test the food on yourself first, right?? So how was it??

      Signed,

Charile (who test day old doughnuts on himself first keeping everyone safe. Confession to make: Uhh, well umm, that’s because I eat them all up)

I can’t argue you there, Pinky..

It was not an article that had my interest or concern..

        Sorry about that stinker, everyone..

Aww, Crow Pie. Yes, I agree with you..

My Sasha likes my food more than her own, i can’t blame her though..

She now has kidney damage and I suspect it is from the poison dog treats I mentioned above..

So she is now on a special kidney diet, but I am going to start making her food.

Only most of the “store bought” food is bad.

Has anyone else found that if you buy fruits or veggies, they will only keep a day or 2?

I bought tomatoes the other day and when I was slicing it that night for dinner, that same night, it was already moldy and nasty inside..

I took them back to the store right off..

Same thing with potatoes, I bought a bag and only one out of 3 pounds was edible.. :???:

        • Pink Slime

Sorry, I don’t shop out of the garbage bins. Try a store.

        • CrowPie

Yes, N. Morgan, I have found that store bought veggies and fruits are often bad, sometimes on the day of purchase.

I have bought lemons that are rotten on the inside the day of purchase.

On that note, I bought groceries yesterday and was shocked to find my small town grocery store had reduced its produce section to the size of the ‘cheese’ section in most grocery stores. Produce was stocked in 1/2 inch black baskets and shelved just like the cheese section.

I saw slim pickins. It doesn’t look good for winter….

However, my dwarf lemon plant is full of nearly ripe lemons and my dwarf banana plant is due to bloom this winter.

          .

          • CrowPie

And Morgan…I’m sorry your baby isn’t well. I hope it improves with a healthy diet.

            • Pink Slime

Why don’t she donate a kidney?

            • CrowPie

              Down Boy! Down!

Who let Pinkie out of the ‘angle corner?’ He is insulting innocent contributors and smearing donut glaze (at least I think that’s what that is….. ) every where.

    • CrowPie

Ahem…..Tonight for supper my Pom-chi was thrilled to have a bed of corn bread covered with home made vegetable soup (with spinach) and a small side of home made mac and cheese.

She ate every bite and begged for more……who needs dog food?
