Heart Attack: Aspirin VS Magnesium

Heart Attack:  Aspirin VS Magnesium

“See your doctor” (disclaimer).

Millions of people take aspirin daily to reduce their chances of having a heart attack.  According to the very informative Wikipedia article (please read it) here

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aspirin#Gastrointestinal

“One trial found that among those likely having a ST-segment elevation MI, aspirin saves the life of 1 in 42…”

What is ST-segment elevation MI (STMI)?

A severe heart attack caused by a prolonged period of blocked blood supply that affects a large area of the heart. These attacks carry a substantial risk of death and disability and call for a quick response by many individuals and systems.

Soooo Aspirin increases your chances of surviving one of the most severe heart conditions by about 2.4 percent.  Wow (sarcasm).

Here is a link to a study using magnesium:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=7786690

“Ninety-five patients with acute myocardial infarction were followed up for 6 months to 3 years (mean 25.4 months) in a preliminary study to compare the effects of intravenous magnesium (49 patients) with that of intravenous propranolol (44 patients) given immediately after admission to the intensive care unit. There were four cardiac deaths in the propranolol group and no deaths in the magnesium group…”

Sooo about 9 percent of the non-magnesium group and none of the magnesium group after 3 years.  It looks like the success rate for this study for magnesium is about 9 percent.  Wow.

This was magnesium administered intravenously just during the stay at the hospital, yet it had long term health benefits.  What health benefits can we expect from oral supplementation of magnesium?

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12972103

Quote from this study:

“When adjustments were made for age and other nutrients (singly or combined), there was a 1.7- to 2.1-fold excess in the risk of CHD in the lowest versus highest quintiles (p <0.001). The excess risk ranged from 1.5- to 1.8-fold after further adjustment for other cardiovascular risk factors (p <0.05).”

What does that mean?  Your risk coronary heart disease may almost cut in half (50 percent) depending on your dietary intake of magnesium.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26082204

Quote from this study:

“CONCLUSIONS:  Lower dietary magnesium intake was associated with higher BP and stroke risk, which may have implications for primary prevention.”

Sooo higher magnesium intake typically equals lower blood pressure and lower risk of stroke.

According to this study, Magnesium lowers your risk of colon cancer as well:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26390877

According to this study, Magnesium may lower your risk of diabetes:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26706038

“These results suggest that a low magnesium level is an independent risk factor for pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes, and that the reduction of serum magnesium is associated with type 2 diabetes in a southern Chinese population.”
