Turn Any Motor into a Wind Generator

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

In this video watch how simple it is to make a wind-powered generator. Watch as John Park, from Maker Workshop, takes an old treadmill motor and some PVC pipe and in just a short time turns them into a wind-power generator. This video should inspire those who think making a wind-powered generator is difficult. In fact, as you will see in the video, the process is not only quite simple but also very inexpensive. Look around your house as you may very well have all the components necessary to build your very own wind-powered generator. This is a completely scalable build so whether you want to recharge your cell phone or power your house, this video covers all the basics.

      Not ANY motor.
My gas powered briggs and stratton for example.
Perhaps you meant any ELECTRIC motor. and yeah duh. Who didn’t know that?

      • PaulTarsuss

Thanks for clarifying, theron. Without your attentive tutelage, thousands, perhaps millions, of people from many nations would have begun attaching propellers to their weed eater motors.

Theron’s response was just his way of saying, “I’m too lazy to ever try this.”

        Good Journeys

        • Theron

Like even tens of people are going to even attempt it.
I bet not even 5 and 4 of those will screw it up.

          • PaulTarsuss

My sarcasm knows no bounds some days…

“Theron’s response was just his way of saying, “I’m too lazy to ever try this.””

That didn’t sound like sarcasm. Truth be told it sounded more like you were taking a shot at him. Either way, PaulTarsuss, I saw your story on ancient electric motors and watched the attached documentary(The 1hr. 7min. one.). It definitely changed my perspective. Thank you.

      • Common Sense

Gas powered devices are ENGINES. Motors by definition are electric.

        • Theron

You are so wrong. A Mazda rotary is a motor smart ass.

          • TRUTHY1

You are so wrong, dumb ass !

          • Eggzactly

Hey Theron, How long has Mazda had electric motors in their cars and when did they come out with them? SA?
BTW~ Nikola Tesla invented the worlds first electric car. It had a strand of wire 1 mile long wrapped around a wooden pole and connected the wiring from the pole underneath the car to the electric motor and the magnetism of the earth created the power to run the car and it ran and also disappeared shortly after it was a success! Hmmmm, I wonder where it went?

      • TRUTHY1

Motors are electrical in nature, Engines burn fuel to run ! Briggs & Stratton is an engine ! Yeah DUH “Who didn’t know that?” Theron

Recipe for disaster if it has no furling tail. This design has no over-speed protection.

    • CosmicKiwiPerth

Quite a few people have used Fisher & Paykel washing machine motors for the motors in wind turbines. They are made in New Zealand & probably now also in Australia too. Google the results etc.

      • TRUTHY1

Europe also. The motors are 220 volt 50 hertz.

    • Eggzactly

Treadmill motors are DC power. I have one with a 5 blade 52″ aluminum fan. Here’s the catch, It said the blades that I purchased will spin at 9 miles per hour and needs to be mounted 60′ in the air,,,Thats right 60′. Well, I have it temporarily mounted on my back deck which is 9′ feet off of the ground facing North. On windy days it will spin but not fast. I went out there with a meter and spun it as fast as I could by hand and it produced a whopping 1 volt DC until it slowed down. I dont have a 60′ ladder either and wouldnt climb one if I did! Go Solar!

    • FarmerX

Now, while I admit my first thought when I read “any motor” was the briggs and stratton attached to my dredge outside. However, on a more relavant note. It says “Any Motor” and then it goes on to use a DC motor with no mention of the steps required to convert an AC motor to DC generator.

So really the title should be “How to attach fins to a DC motor and use it as a wind generator” or somthing along those lines.

For thoes who really care, squirell cage type fans are much more efficient. More efficient still are vortex patterned blades. Do it right and it will self amplify the air currents which should significantly increase output power.

But what do I know, I’m just some dumb redneck.

      • Eggzactly

Actually, You are a intelligent redneck! You know the difference between a gas engine and a electric motor.
        Unlike Theron.

        • The Clucker

^^^Yeah sounds pretty damn intelligent to me. Thanks for the good info, FarmerX.
